10 top tips for Craft Fairs
Craft fairs, whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned pro, always provide opportunities to learn valuable tips. I’ve personally gained insights through trial and error in the craft fair scene. Here are a few tips I’d like to share.
Tips...
Tip #1: Plan your display in advance with a mock set-up
Avoid last-minute stress by planning your table layout in advance. Before the event, create a mock set-up in your driveway or another suitable space. Practice assembling your tent, arranging your products, and take photos from different angles. These pictures will serve as a reference during the actual event, eliminating the need to memorise the setup. A pre-planned display makes the morning of the event smoother and more efficient.
Tip #2: Accept various payment methods with a card reader
To cater to customers who prefer card payments, invest in a credit card or debit card reader. While some still use cash, having the option to accept cards can prevent missed sales.
Tip #3: Prioritise self-care and pack snacks and drinks.
Don’t overlook self-care during the event. Busy periods may prevent you from leaving your booth for food, so bring your own snacks, drinks, and even a packed lunch. By taking care of your nourishment, you’ll maintain energy throughout the long day. Packing a small cooler with refreshments ensures you’re prepared and saves money compared to buying food on-site.
Tip #4: Prepare for an outdoor event.
For outdoor events, be ready for unpredictable weather. Carry several garbage bags or a tarp to place beneath your supplies, protecting them from wet ground conditions. I learned this lesson the hard way when moisture ruined the bottom of my product boxes. Even if you use plastic totes, keeping items dry can be crucial. Additionally, these bags can double as garbage collectors during the event.
Tip #5: Provide merchandise bags for customers
Make sure to have bags available for customers to carry their purchases. Keep a variety of sizes to accommodate single and multiple items. Consider adding stickers with your logo to promote your brand while customers carry their bags. Using quality bags, such as kraft bags, adds a professional touch and enhances the overall customer experience.
Tip #6: Pack your car the night before the event
If it feels safe, pack your car the night before the event to avoid last-minute chaos. Early morning set-up times may limit the time available, and waiting until the event day might reveal that everything doesn’t fit as planned. Packing ahead allows you to double-check your inventory, ensure you have everything you need, and minimise stress on the event day.
Tip #7: Clearly display prices or use a price list
Make it easy for customers to determine product prices by placing visible price tags or using a clear price list. Some potential buyers may hesitate to ask for prices, so providing this information upfront helps them make decisions independently. While some individuals may still inquire about prices, transparent pricing facilitates a smoother shopping experience.
Tip #8: Use a tablecloth that reaches the floor
Maintain a polished and professional appearance by using tablecloths that drape all the way to the floor. This allows you to discreetly store extra stock and crates under the table, keeping your booth clutter-free. Remember to iron or steam your tablecloth to present a neat and tidy display. Solid-colour tablecloths are preferable, as busy designs can distract from showcasing your products effectively.
Tip #9: Carry business cards
Although it may seem old-fashioned, bringing business cards is invaluable. Some customers may not be ready to make a purchase at the event but may reach out later because they have your card. They are inexpensive to print, and you can design them for free using tools like Canva. Business cards have led to numerous post-event sales for me, making them a worthwhile investment.
Tip #10: Account for wind during outdoor events
Respect the wind when participating in outdoor events. Use weights to secure your tent or canopy and ensure your display items are anchored to the tables to prevent accidents. If possible, bring sides for your tent, as they offer added protection during windy or unfavourable weather conditions. Being mindful of the wind prevents damage to your table, products, and neighbouring vendors’ setups.
Tip #11: Offer a variety of price points
Cater to a wider customer base by offering products at different price points. Not everyone will have a large budget, so providing options at various price ranges increases the likelihood of sales. Consider offering sales, bundles, or exclusive event deals to entice customers. Experiment with different pricing strategies to appeal to diverse preferences and purchasing capacities. Providing customers with a range of choices enhances their shopping experience.
